Spider-Woman is a captivating animated television series that aired from September 22, 1979, to January 3, 1980, on the ABC network. The imagination Spanish-American studio, DePatie–Freleng Enterprises, teamed up with Marvel Comics Group to create a thrilling show based on Marvel's Spider-Woman comic book series. Marvel's renowned creator Stan Lee served as the series' narrator, adding an authentic touch to the entire experience.

The series stars Jessica Drew, voiced by Joan Van Ark, with her alter ego being the eponymous Spider-Woman. She is a newspaper editor for Justice Magazine and moonlights as a superhero, unbeknownst to her colleagues. Jessica carries a powerful secret—she possesses abilities similar to a spider. As Spider-Woman, she has superhuman strength, speed, and agility enabling her to engage in combat and evoke fear in her adversaries. To complement her power set, Jessica can also spin webs, climb walls, and project venom blasts from her body. Telepathic communication with spiders is another unique attribute that bolsters her tie to her arachnid lineage. The series offers a deep dive into Jessica's life, balancing her everyday routine in a bustling office with her alter-ego's crime-fighting adventures.

In the office, Jessica handles her duties as the editor of Justice Magazine, maintaining a semblance of normalcy and often enlisting the help of her colleagues - photographer Jeff Hunt and Jessica's nephew Billy Drew in her action-packed adventures without revealing her secret superhero identity. Jessica, Jeff, and Billy form a virtually unshakeable team, exposing and taking down multiple phenomena while dealing with their personal dynamics as they work to unearth various criminal activities in the city.

The plots of the episodes successfully blend comic book elements with a conventional detective narrative while keeping a taste of mystery. Each episode introduces an intriguing villain or predicament, spotlighting the Spider-Woman's ability to resolve conflicts and fight the good fight, frequently accompanied by an important life lesson for its younger viewers.

The show is also remembered for its representation of many Marvel Universe characters. Along with the primary cast, the series also features guest appearances from other cherished Marvel staples, including Spider-Man and the Kingpin. The storylines of each episode are independent, yet they create a contiguous narrative that underlines Spider-Woman's evolution throughout the series, facing off against a galaxy of supernatural villains and threats, ranging from sorcerers and aliens to sea monsters and robots.

On a technical level, Spider-Woman showcases the animation style common to the era in which it was produced - late 1970s and early 1980s. The color palette, the design of the characters, and the overall atmospheric backgrounds convey the vintage aesthetic of the time. The animators also bring in more complex visual elements, such as perspective shifts and unique angles, to create a more dramatic and dynamic watching experience.

The series' action sequences are interspersed with dry humor, thrilling chases, and heart-pounding action that kept fans returning for more. Despite its relatively short run, Spider-Woman has secured its position as a cult classic in the annals of animated superhero television series. Its primary legacy is the character of Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman herself, whose intelligence, bravery, and resilience made her a hit with viewers and a laudable female figure in the superhero genre.

Although primarily targeting a younger audience, Spider-Woman’s appeal is far-reaching, captivating audiences from various age groups. The series serves as a trip down memory lane for adults who grew up watching it while continuing to draw in new generations with its classic superhero theme, adventure-driven plotlines, and engaging characters.
