The Orville is a distinctive blend of comedy, drama, and science fiction, the style and affect of which is an unmistakable tribute to the classic Star Trek series. The show debuted on FOX in September 2017. Creator Seth MacFarlane, of Family Guy and American Dad fame, uses his trademark humor to brighten up the normally serious genre. Despite its comedic bent, though, The Orville takes its world-building seriously, and has built a loyal following for its thoughtfully designed and skillfully executed homage to the stylistic conventions of the past.

Set in the 25th Century, The Orville follows the crew members of the titular space exploration vessel, the USS Orville (ECV-197). This mid-level exploratory spaceship is part of the Planetary Union, a peacekeeping organization on Earth that includes thousands of other starships. The series embarks on their adventurous and often unpredictable journeys through the cosmos, as they face off against alien life-forms, navigate time travel, and encounter various intergalactic anomalies.

MacFarlane sits in the captain's chair as Ed Mercer, whose somewhat messy personal life adds a comedic twist to the show. Adrianne Palicki, known for her work on the series Friday Night Lights, plays Commander Kelly Grayson, Mercer's ex-wife, whose surprising appointment to the Orville adds a dimension of interpersonal drama to the ship's high-stakes adventures. This unexpected reunion forms the backbone of the show’s dynamics, creating a tension that provides comic relief, interpersonal drama, and an underlying story of redemption and personal growth.

The show features a diverse ensemble cast that includes Penny Johnson Jerald as Dr. Claire Finn, the ship's head physician; Scott Grimes as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, the ship's helmsman and Mercer's best friend since their time at Union Point (the Planetary Union's training centre); and Peter Macon as Lieutenant Commander Bortus, an alien from a single-sex species.

The crew is further rounded out by Halston Sage as Lieutenant Alara Kitan, a Xelayan with superior physical strength due to her planet's high gravity; J. Lee as Lieutenant John LaMarr, who initially serves as the ship's navigator but later becomes Chief Engineer; Mark Jackson as Isaac, an advanced artificial life-form from the planet Kaylon; and Chad Coleman as Klyden, Bortus's mate who stirs up the dynamics amongst the crew members with his unconventional activities.

Later seasons introduce new crew members, including Jessica Szohr as Lieutenant Talla Keyali, the ship's new security officer after Lieutenant Kitan's departure; and Anne Winters as Charly Burke, a young and brilliant engineer who brings her own unique twist to the ship's ensemble.

The Orville confidently straddles the line between drama and comedy. The serious moments are genuinely heart-rending, and the show’s warpspeed shifts into goofball comedy never undermine its sober explorations of social and moral issues. It uses its science-fiction setting to tackle real-world subjects, from cultural intolerance to gender identity.

The show blends in thrilling special effects with imaginative exotic landscapes, and epic battles with alien forces in the vast expanse of space. Drawing inspiration from many previous science fiction works, its production values and special effects have generally been praised, resulting in a show that is visually stunning and narratively engaging.

Despite its eclectic mix of genres, or perhaps because of it, The Orville has managed to carve a unique niche in the television landscape. It has garnered a loyal fan base because it combines familiar elements of space exploration sci-fi with its own unique comedic spin while still holding true to the essence of the genre.

With its futuristic setting, ambitious storylines, and unique blend of drama and humor, The Orville successfully creates a universe that is not only amusing and entertaining, but also thought-provoking and visually captivating. It's an engaging take on the space expedition narrative that leverages nostalgia for past classics while injecting contemporary themes and unique sensibilities. The universe of The Orville is a place where the viewer can let their imagination roam free, and experience equal parts of laughter, drama and wonder.

The Orville is a series categorized as a new series. Spanning 3 seasons with a total of 36 episodes, the show debuted on 2017. The series has earned a mostly positive reviews from both critics and viewers. The IMDb score stands at 8.0.
