Trickster

He is painstakingly working his way through life, manages his dysfunctional family, and steers clear of trouble. Yet, along the way, he discovers he’s no average teenager.

Jared, played by Joel Oulette, is introduced as a regular indigenous kid, burdened with adult responsibilities. He makes and sells ecstasy to support his family financially. Besides, he keeps his loved ones guarded from their own issues. His mother, Maggie (Crystle Lightning), suffers from substance abuse and claims to be able to talk to spirits. His unemployed father Phil (Craig Lauzon) resides in the backyard in a rusted old car, separated from his mother.

As the episodes unfold, viewers witness the harsh realities of indigenous life in Canada, portrayed with heart-wrenching accuracy. Yet, combined seamlessly with these realities is a world of magic and monsters, folktales and legends, which become increasingly real and inescapable for Jared. Disturbing hallucinations, bizarre encounters with supernatural creatures, and chilling visions plague his life.

Jared’s exploration of his increasingly strange life is ably supported by the diverse characters that revolve around him. This includes his love-interest Sarah (Anna Lambe), who is dealing with the distress of her personal life; his uncle Ritchie (Kalani Queypo), a man shrouded in mystery; and his best friend, Crashpad (Nathan Alexis), who becomes a sympathizing beneficiary of his peculiar experiences.

Additionally, she makes sure to tackle the underlying theme of colonialism and how it impacts this indigenous community in a truthful, thought-provoking manner.

Although the show has historical and mythical undertones, Trickster doesn’t shy away from showcasing modernity as a significant part of the character’s lives. The series effectively juxtaposes the ancient culture of Canada's indigenous population with their modern-day struggles for survival. The narrative also underscores the struggle of Indigenous communities to preserve their traditions and beliefs while having to conform to the modern Eurocentric world.
