Yatterman is a lively, vividly colored anime series, initially premiering in Japan on Nippon Television back in 2008. A reimagination of the original 1977 show which was part of the Time Bokan franchise, Yatterman quickly gained recognition for its kitschy humor, lighthearted action scenes and vibrant animation by Tatsunoko Production, the same studio behind the original series.

The plot orbits around two young, brilliant mechanics who double as superhero versions of themselves — Gan Takada (Yatterman No. 1) and his girlfriend, Ai Kaminari (Yatterman No. 2). Together, they've forged an impressive arsenal of robots. During their ordinary lives, they manage a small, neighborhood robotics shop, but when danger looms, they transform into Yatterman-1 and Yatterman-2, champions of justice against evildoers. With Gan's engineering genius and Ai's knack for gadgetry, they conquer threats to peace and prosperity.

Their chief adversaries are the Doronbo Gang, comprised of Leader Dokurobei’s three subordinates: Boyacky, a rat-faced, crafty inventor, Tonzura, the muscle-tanked yet timid member, and the group's seductive yet immature leader, Doronjo. The Doronbo Gang, being consistent throughout the Time Bokan series, is known for their persistent mischief and chaotic plans, usually revolving around their quests to locate the Dokuro Stones, which are believed to grant wishes upon their collection. Despite their intentions, they maintain an endearing characteristic with their infallible sense of humor and an uncanny habit of landing into laughable predicaments.

Another highlight of Yatterman is the inclusion of robots of all sizes and shapes, known as Mechas. Both Yatterman and the Doronbo gang utilize these robots in their adventures. These include Yatterman’s mascot robot, Yatterwan, a large canine-inspired machine capable of shooting small robots from its mouth, along with a variety of comedic and uniquely designed robots built by the Doronbo Gang for their various plots.

The storyline weaves itself around the constant struggle between the Yatterman duo and the Doronbo Gang, introducing new characters, comedic situations, and exciting showdowns that keep the audience captivated. However, despite the mischief and the clashes, there's more to it than just a simple narrative of good against evil. Each episode combines comedy, drama, and action, with sprinkles of moral lesson, making the series appealing to a wide audience range from children to adults.

Furthermore, the show possesses an upbeat, catchy opening theme song and ending sequence, both of which have become quite popular among J-Pop and anime fans alike.

Yatterman’s art style features over-saturated colors and fluid animations that boast of their own unique charm, giving the show an unmistakable, vibrant identity. The character designs are unique, subtly incorporating elements various pop cultures and give off a certain timeless appeal that welcomes viewers of all generations. With their overdramatic expressions, disproportionate bodies and eccentric costumes, they capture the essence of disputing a cohesive storyline with flamboyant theatrics that add a level of comic absurdity and light-heartedness to the series.

The show comfortably submerges itself into the realm of quirky humor and slapstick comedy, neatly wrapping the absurdity of the scenario around witty dialogue and clever visual cues. The goofy jokes are perfectly complemented by the absurdly creative and somewhat illogical innovations produced by the characters, providing comic relief at unpredictable moments and preserving the overall theme of having fun with the narratives' predictability.

The series was popular enough to be followed by a 2009 film adaptation along with a 2008 spin-off named "Yatterman Night" and a 2015 live-action film. Both versions, while distinct, carry the iconic style and humor of the Yatterman series.
